From 3mm to 50mm: How Ribbon Width Changes Everything in UK Crafting

Ribbon width is one of those things that seems obvious until you are standing in front of a half-finished project wondering why it looks slightly off. The colour is right, the fibre is lovely, but the scale is wrong. A wide ribbon has swallowed a small gift card. A narrow ribbon has disappeared on a big wreath. This guide is here to save you from that particular crafty sigh.

At Ribbon Warehouse, we sell ribbons from 3mm to 50mm for a reason. Each width has a job. Once you know the scale, choosing the right roll becomes much quicker, and your projects look more intentional.

Why width matters more than colour sometimes

Colour gets all the attention, but width controls the visual weight. A 38mm velvet ribbon feels rich, generous and a little theatrical. A 6mm satin ribbon feels neat, precise and quiet. The same colour can read completely differently depending on how much space it takes up.

Fibre and finish matter too. Satin has a smooth shine that suits hair bows, wedding stationery and Christmas baubles. Grosgrain has a ribbed texture that grips well on gift boxes and hampers. Velvet is soft and luxurious, best kept for statement bows. Recycled cotton is matte and natural, ideal for kraft paper, rustic wreaths and eco-minded wrapping. Metallic-edge ribbon adds a controlled bit of sparkle without taking over.

The quick UK cheat sheet: 3mm to 50mm

Width Best for Avoid using it for
3mm Card making, tiny tags, jewellery boxes, thread-like accents Large gifts, wreaths, hair bows
6mm Gift cards, slim boxes, wedding invites, cake pops Big statement bows, heavy bouquets
10mm Bottles, small gifts, baby hair bows, sewing trims Oversized boxes, large wreaths
15mm Everyday gift wrap, medium bows, card borders Very small tags, very large hamper boxes
25mm Most gift boxes, bouquet handles, adult hair bows, wreath accents Tiny jewellery boxes, A6 cards
38mm Large gifts, statement velvet bows, hamper boxes, door wreaths Small crafts, delicate stationery
50mm Oversized boxes, mantel garlands, dramatic wreath bows, upholstery trims Card making, small hair bows, fine sewing

Gift boxes: match the ribbon to the box, not to habit

A good rule is that the ribbon should be roughly one-fifth to one-third of the box's width. A small jewellery box looks best with 6mm or 10mm. A standard shirt box or book-sized gift sits nicely with 15mm or 25mm. A large hamper or moving-style box can handle 38mm or 50mm without looking strained.

If you are using a busy wrapping paper, choose a narrower ribbon so the pattern still reads. If the paper is plain, go wider. Grosgrain is a brilliant all-rounder for boxes because it holds a bow shape and does not slide about as much as satin.

Bouquets and flower wraps: keep the stems happy

For a hand-tied bouquet, 25mm ribbon is the classic choice around the stems, with 10mm or 15mm used to tie a tag or finish the handle. If the bouquet is very large, 38mm can work beautifully, especially in velvet or cotton. For a small posy, stay at 15mm or 25mm. Wider ribbon can crush delicate stems if pulled too tight, so keep the bow firm rather than fierce.

For wedding work, satin in 25mm or 38mm gives a polished finish. For market-style bunches, recycled cotton in 15mm feels relaxed and suitably British.

Hair bows and accessories: scale matters

A baby or toddler hair bow usually looks best in 10mm or 15mm. Older children and adults can carry 25mm comfortably, while 38mm makes a proper statement bow for a special occasion. If you are making clips or headbands, choose a ribbon with a bit of body, such as grosgrain or velvet, rather than a very slinky satin that may need extra stiffening.

Card making and papercraft: flat and fine wins

Cards are small, so 3mm, 6mm and 10mm are your friends. Use 3mm for delicate borders and tiny bows, 6mm for gift cards and tags, and 10mm for a more visible strip across an A6 card. Anything wider than 15mm can overwhelm an A6 or 5x7 inch card unless it is a deliberate statement.

Double-sided tape is often better than glue for ribbons on card, and a small knot looks neater than a full bow on a tiny tag.

Wreaths, door decor and sewing trims

For a door wreath, 38mm or 50mm ribbon makes a bow that can actually be seen from the pavement. Use 25mm to weave through the wreath or tie smaller accents. For garlands and mantel arrangements, 25mm to 50mm works well, depending on how much greenery you are working with.

In sewing, 10mm to 25mm ribbon is useful for waist ties, apron strings, bag handles and decorative trims. Very narrow 3mm to 6mm ribbon is better for lingerie straps, loop labels and fine edging. Always check whether the ribbon is washable before sewing it into a garment.

Common mistakes that make a good project look off

Over-bowing a small gift is the classic error. If the bow is wider than the gift, it starts to look like a decoration that happens to be attached to a box. Underestimating quantities is another one. A simple bow on a medium box can use around 0.75m to 1m of 25mm ribbon, while a large double bow can easily take 2m to 3m. Buy one extra metre rather than running short halfway through.

Ignoring fibre is the third trap. Satin slips, grosgrain grips, velvet crushes, cotton softens. Match the fibre to the job, not just the colour card. And do not forget the finish: a shiny metallic ribbon on a rustic kraft parcel can look brilliant, but too much shine on an already busy paper can tip into chaos.
